The GEIG Fellowship

About

GEIG pivoted during the Covid-19 pandemic by launching a virtual masterclass series and the GEIG Fellowship for young professionals. This fellowship is a 6-month to 1-year professional development program where Fellows provide service to GEIG in areas like project planning and communication. During their tenure, Fellows develop a community project and receive mentoring in research, development, and project management. The first cohort, for example, organized a quiz for street children, fundraised for students, and supported test prep for high schoolers.commit 6 months to 1 year of service based on academic leave and availability of the applicants with the organisation. Victoria Mends

Victoria has been accepted into the Master's in Biomedical Engineering at NYU, with an $8,000 yearly scholarship, making it her top choice due to its research and innovation focus. While She also received offers from George Washington University (75% tuition remission), Michigan Technological University, and the University of Bristol, She is actively seeking additional funding to cover remaining costs for NYU.

Beyond academics, she is deeply committed to STEM education and volunteering. As Co-founder and COO of Firefly IO, she has taught over 10,000 students (especially girls and underprivileged youth) robotics, coding, and 3D printing in Ghana, and co-established the Ghana Robotics Competition. She also lead community initiatives like free health screenings and mentorship for young women in STEM.

As a grateful GEIG Fellow, she is dedicated to both benefiting from and endorsing the organisation's mission. She plan's to mentor and train other young women in STEM, offering workshops and career guidance, and advocating for girls' education in Ghana. Her NYU education will empower her to drive impactful biomedical innovations to enhance healthcare access in Africa, aligning with GEIG's mission to revolutionise education through technology and help young women succeed in STEM.
